Translation (English)

0:15We will now begin Minister Motegi's regular press conference. Minister, please go ahead.

0:18Yes. I have no announcements or reports from my side today, so if you have any questions, please proceed.

0:26Those who have questions, please raise your hand, and once called upon, move to a nearby microphone and state your company name and your name before asking your question. Ms. Nagahara from Sankei Shimbun, please.

0:38I am Nagahara from Sankei Shimbun. Thank you. Prime Minister Takaichi will meet with Polish Prime Minister Tusk tomorrow, on the 15th. On the 1st of this month, French President Macron visited Japan, and the Japan-France 2+2 meeting was also held, demonstrating successive occasions to confirm solidarity with Europe. Could you tell us again about the importance of Japan-Europe cooperation? Also, a summit will be held in France in June, but no Japanese Prime Minister has visited Europe since former Prime Minister Shibata. Although visits by European leaders to Japan continue, please share your thoughts on the importance of the Japanese Prime Minister visiting Europe to communicate with them.

This is the Translate tab of a real job on the sample talk. One target language is active at a time; pick another and the translation runs again.

“It has really helped simplify the work and save time, especially when working on transcriptions, translations, and subtitles.”

What translating a YouTube video means here

Translating a YouTube video here means turning its speech into text and showing that text next to a translation in your language, line by line. The video keeps its own voice; you read the words.

The same 30 seconds in three languages

Summary

Real output of the sample job, unedited: the Japanese transcript and two translations from the Translate tab. A person chose which 30 seconds to show.

90+ languages in and out

The video can be in any of the languages in the list, and the translation can go into any of them. The video's own language is detected, or you set it before the job starts. Pick the target from a box you can type into.

Text, not dubbing

The video keeps its own voice. Nothing is dubbed, no voice is cloned and no audio is replaced. You read the translation next to the original words, in a normal browser tab, with the real video playing above it. Viewers who switched off YouTube's auto dubbing get the version they asked for: the speaker's voice and the words in their language.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose Transcription

The video's language is detected automatically. If you know it, set it before you start: that helps the engine.

  2. 2

Open the Translate tab and pick your language

Type the name of your language in the box and choose it. The whole transcript is translated with its speaker labels and timestamps in place.

  3. 3

Click a timestamp to jump, then copy or export

A click on a line plays that moment in the video. Copy the translation, or export it as plain text or Word.

Things worth knowing

Watching a drama on the TV

The Translate tab gives you the words in a browser, next to the video. If you want the words in the picture, so the episode plays on the TV with subtitles in your language, that is a different job. Choose Subtitles (Burned in) instead of Transcription, add your language as an extra language, and the result is an MP4 with the subtitles rendered into the frames, one video per language. It costs more minutes than a transcript: three times the video length at default quality, four times at 1080p and five times at 2160p, because the whole video is rendered again, plus one more time the video length for each extra language. For one episode a week that is still a small number. For reading along on a phone or laptop, the Translate tab on this page is the cheaper route and the translation itself adds no minutes at all.

Learning with it

Language learners use the two columns as a reader. Play a line in the original, read the translation, then play it again. Every line keeps its timestamp, so a click on the row replays that moment and you hear the sentence as it was spoken. There is no word-by-word hover and no dictionary popup: the product does not have one, and this page does not pretend it does. What you get is the full sentence in both languages, aligned by line, with the real audio one click away. Copy both versions into your notes app if you want to build your own list.

When the auto translate is gibberish

YouTube's auto translate is a translation of YouTube's auto captions. When the captions are wrong, the translation is wrong twice. Japanese and Korean viewers report this most, and it is the reason this page exists. Here the chain is shorter. The engine listens to the audio of the video and writes a fresh transcript in the spoken language. The translation is made from that transcript, not from the caption track, so a video whose captions are broken, missing or set to the wrong language starts from clean text. The quality still depends on the sound: a clear speaker with a good microphone comes out clean, a noisy street interview less so. Words the engine was unsure about are marked in the editor, so you know where to check.

The problem in their words

Does anyone know how to see them with English subtitles? YouTube's auto translate is producing gibberish.
Hacker News
On mobile (YouTube app on Android, Firefox, Chrome) and my TV the 'Auto-translate' option is missing, so I can only view the generated subtitles in the original language.
Hacker News
Built this because Chrome's Live Caption is English-only and every 'translate any video' tool is paid SaaS.

No. The engine takes the audio of the video and turns it into text; it never reads YouTube's caption track. A video with no captions, with auto captions switched off by the uploader, or with captions in the wrong language works the same as any other. What matters is the sound of the video, not what YouTube shows under it.
No minutes are charged for the Translate tab. There is one limit: an account can request 60 new results per hour across clean, summary and translate. Reopening a job shows the translation it already has; only picking a language sends a new request.
No. The summary is written in the language spoken in the video, in paragraphs, and it does not follow the Translate tab. If you want the gist in your own language, translate the transcript and read the first lines, or copy the summary into a translator of your choice. The transcript translation keeps the timestamps, the summary has none.
Yes, as a Subtitles (SRT or VTT) job instead of a Transcription. Add your language as an extra subtitle language when you start, and you get SRT and VTT in the original and in your language, with the same cue timing in both. If the video is yours, upload the translated SRT in YouTube Studio and viewers can switch to it. Subtitles from a YouTube video
Viewers report that the auto translate option shows on the desktop site but is missing in the YouTube app on phones and on TVs, where only the original captions are offered. This page does not depend on that option. Open the job in any browser on your phone, and the original and the translation stack one above the other.
